Buy a resistance band: which band is right for your workout?

Resistance bands are elastic training bands that create resistance when stretched. The further you stretch the band, the greater the tension. This allows you to strengthen muscles specifically without needing dumbbells or machines. Resistance bands, or resistance bands in English, come in various designs. Which one is right for you depends on what you want to train.

What resistance level do you need?

With THERABAND, the color indicates the resistance. The scale has eight levels, ranging from beige (very light) through yellow, red, green, blue, black, and silver to gold (very heavy). Many people start with yellow or red for beginners and in rehab. Other brands use their own color systems; you can find the level on the respective product page.

Instead of a weight rating, resistance bands use resistance levels. The reason: how much resistance you feel depends on how far you stretch the band. If you want to progress, a resistance band set with several levels is practical. Our THERABAND Colors and Resistance guide explains all colors and levels in detail.

Latex, latex-free, or fabric?

Classic resistance bands are made of natural latex. The material is highly elastic and allows for precise resistance adjustment. Alternatives are available for people with latex allergies: THERABAND offers latex-free bands, such as the CLX resistance band and latex-free sets for beginners and advanced users. Fabric bands are another option. They slip less on the skin and are especially suitable for exercises targeting the legs and glutes.

Resistance bands for home use, sports, and physiotherapy

At home and on the go: A resistance band weighs almost nothing and fits in any bag. With a door anchor, any sturdy door becomes an attachment point, while handles make pulling and pushing exercises more comfortable.

In sports: Power bands and loop bands are used in strength training, warm-up routines, and athletic training, for example for the hips, leg alignment, and core.

In physiotherapy and rehab: Resistance bands have been widely used for decades because the resistance can be adjusted in small increments. Rolls of material are available for clinics to cut to size. If you have any medical conditions or are exercising after an injury, consult your doctor or physiotherapist before starting.
